We are excited to announce that our City of Anderson Transit Station project has received a 2024 Design Excellence Award from the Architectural Institute of America’s Indianapolis Chapter. The project was awarded the highest honor in the category for New Construction – Greater than $5M. Thank you AIA Indianapolis!
The new Transit Station is the fruition of a nearly decade-long effort of multiple city agencies for a new multi-modal transit hub for local and regional bus routes. The one-story north block of the building serves as the Transit Station, and the southern three-story mass is leasable tenant space. Design of the Transit Station incorporates modern detailing yet integrating into the surrounding context through authentic, durable materials and a focus on the pedestrian experience.
High goals for energy efficiency and sustainability were set early on, which ensured they were a focus of the project. The mechanical system uses a geothermal-sourced heat pump system for the heating and cooling needs, relying on 24 vertical underground wells that were carefully coordinated on the crowded site crossed with underground utilities. A solar PV array, located on a portion of the roof, was sized to produce enough energy to account for Transit Station’s entire electrical, thus, the city-occupied portion of the building operates at net zero. The project is LEED Gold certified, a credential given by the U.S. Green Building Council.
