City of Indianapolis Animal Care Shelter

The design of the new Indianapolis Animal Care facility will allow the organization to upgrade their ability to provide services to the community. The current building itself is a constraint to services that have evolved over the years. Plans call for the new campus to include an upgraded on-site medical facility that will also elevate service capabilities.

Design considerations involve configuring spaces to ensure reduction of stress for animals awaiting adoption, and allowing staff to clean the enclosures with ease. Spaces for animals include natural light, ample space per animal to match the size of the animal, and compartmentalized kennels to prevent the spread of illnesses.

The design will move animals throughout the building efficiently when needed, and house them with comfort. These decisions are made to make the animals more comfortable, and therefore more adoptable, which will result in shorter length of stay and allow the shelter to help more animals.

The project will also provide adequate spaces for exotic animals, medical care, public spaces, training areas, administrative services, and outdoor spaces – all designed with consideration of operational efficiencies.
