Hamilton Heights Elementary School & Early Childhood Learning Center

The Hamilton Heights primary school, serving students K-2, was an under-utilized building that was expanded in this project to additionally accommodate Pre-K and grades 3-4.This solution was determined throughout the Corporation-wide Grade Reconfiguration Study, and the Comprehensive Facility Plan based on the condition of existing building stock and the vision for improved education environments.

The existing primary school building was in generally good condition, requiring updated lighting and finish replacements throughout.

Site work was implemented to improve the drop-off and pick-up processes, and new playgrounds to accommodate the additional students. Improvements were made to the special education program areas and a dedicated playground was added specifically for these students. The expansion on the south side of the building added an additional gymnasium, and created another courtyard that is a secure area for more outdoor activity space or lunch.

Adaptable collaboration spaces outside the classrooms allow access to technology and spaces for flexible programming like teacher training.

The addition to the academic wing houses preschoolers during the day, but was designed to be flexible enough to function for students of all ages in the before-and-after-school programs that also reside here. The entire facility can transform, with central classroom areas opening to accommodate programs during the vacation months, or an open activity / play space environment when needed.

Our design prioritized natural day light. With exterior walls facing three out of the four cardinal directions, a trio of different glass types were implemented to address glare and maximize future utility savings.
