The Hamilton Heights High School project involved renovation of 80% of the 231,000 square foot existing building. Part of the building was demolished and replaced by a 13,500 square foot addition. These measures were intentionally phased to ensure minimal disruption to the regular academic function.
The school underwent extensive renovations, including upgrades to safety at the entrances and throughout the building, as well as a variety of academic areas. New science classrooms feature flexible ‘Super Labs,’ student collaboration areas, and teacher support space. A renovated cafeteria and servery, provides a variety of seating options for students while supporting the school’s goal of providing healthy food choices and expanded menu options. The media center was expanded into an underutilized courtyard and fitted with a large skylight and greenroof – creating a flexible student collaboration hub that is available to students throughout the learning day, as well as, before and after school. A new agriculture and engineering area includes a state-of-the-art, fully-automated greenhouse, in addition to digital BIM workstations, welding bays, and shop space for construction and vehicle maintenance. The business classrooms include collaboration areas within a professional setting that supports the schools robust BPA program. New band and choir spaces were created that feature rehearsal and practice spaces that are audibly isolated from the rest of the building. Every classroom received a ‘face-lift’ with new finishes and educational technology was universally deployed throughout the academic areas.
Additionally, a new athletic common core area known as “the Hall of Champions’ was created to establish a vibrant hub of activity that connected the gymnasium, swimming pool, athletic offices, and provided support and gathering space during athletic events. The area houses a variety of memorabilia and features elements that display the school’s ‘Hall of Fame’ electorate. The area includes a concession area and a student-run ‘Fan Shop’. This new public-facing space promotes school pride and provides ample natural light, with site lines that allow for views into the swimming and diving pool. During the academic day, it is used as an independent study and student collaboration area.
