The renovation and expansion of the University of Southern Indiana’s Recreation, Fitness, and Wellness Center (RFW) transformed a dated three-story recreation building into a centralized wellness hub, uniting eight departments previously scattered across USI’s 1,400-acre campus. The design fosters a holistic ecosystem that integrates mental, spiritual, and physical health services—placing wellness at the heart of student success.
A key design goal was connection to nature, achieved through biophilic principles, which reduces stress and enhances well-being. Natural light, interior glazing, plantings, biomimicry, and sustainable materials blur the boundaries between interior and exterior.
The 1990’s building has been reimagined to align with USI’s contemporary campus identity. A cork pathway leads to a central desk designed to echo the rock formations of the climbing wall behind it. Along the path, students and visitors encounter spaces for community, learning, and reflection—including offices, meeting rooms, a demonstration kitchen for healthy cooking classes, a game room, and a meditation/prayer lounge. Architectural features include sculpted gypsum sun rays in the meditation room, multiple dimmable light sources that provide gentle illumination, and color palettes that evoke happiness and serenity.
A standout feature is the two-story quiet lounge projecting toward the main campus sidewalk. It provides tranquil views of the library, arena, and student union. Inside, wood slat ceilings, green moss walls, fractal-patterned carpets, and rusticated cypress column inserts evoke the peace of a forest clearing.
From the moment of entry, the RFW invites students and staff to take ownership of their well-being through spaces that promote self-care, connection, and resilience. The center creates an environment where health and success grow together.
