Our renovations at Mooresville High School addressed functionally needs in the building’s overall layout and flow of operations. Administrative and student service offices were consolidated from their previous locations scattered around the building, to a centralized hub. Each of these suites are now designed to have their own independent entrances and sense-of-place, but interconnected to a common core within, for ‘back of house’ access.
Construction of a virtual learning center, centrally located within the academic wing, replaced an outdated media center. Skylights were implemented to drive natural light into this area that was otherwise landlocked by the surrounding rooms.
The project also addressed several hallway congestion issues, including one to-and-from the cafeteria, where our team designed a two-story concourse connecting the cafeteria to the ‘secure-side’ of the main entrance. In addition to serving immediate circulatory needs, the concourse is also a multi-functional solution to the school’s extracurricular scheduling conflicts. The two-story light-filled volume, can now house extracurricular practices when those events interfere with the gymnasium schedule.
We purposely organized these spaces with transparent walls to provide visibility, thus minimizing un-supervised areas. Those new lines of site also promote a sense of community and connectivity within the school’s common areas. Utilizing an existing portion of the spacious courtyard, the concourse displays large-scale school pride graphics. This creates a dynamic back drop that is highly visible from the courtyard, through floor-to-ceiling glass curtain wall that separates the new addition from the remaining courtyard and floods the concourse with natural light.
