The new Westfield Washington Public Library will be a 45,000 square-foot facility in Westfield, Indiana – one of the fastest growing cities in the state. The previous building was no longer meeting the needs of a population that had nearly quadrupled over the past two decades.
Our team worked with the library over a year-long period to study their existing building which had been added onto several times and was landlocked. When the determination was made that the library would search for a new location, we began helping the library study the options of several different sites and ultimately make an acquisition.
The new $17M library will feature high-quality community amenities, located at the corner of Park Street and Westfield Boulevard in the Grand Millennium Center. It provides space for all the services and collection loved at the library today, but now also expands its ability to host more community programs, larger events, more diverse education opportunities, greater access to technology, and so much more.
The project organizes itself into two major ‘halves.’ The primary elevation facing the street, and thus the City, is dominated by large flexible public and programming spaces that together act as a community center and hub of activity for the growing City. With capacity for 200 people, this feature of the project will help fulfill the City’s need for more gathering and event space for large public functions. As the building steps back into the site, the spaces transition to more traditional library uses, and have a hierarchy of privacy.
Additional unique amenities will also include an interactive play area and a digital lab allowing patrons to make their own videos or podcasts. Located right in the heart of Westfield, this project will be transformative for the growing City.
