The Teen and Children’s Areas at the Indianapolis Public Library’s Central Library are in the midst of their first renovation since opening in 2007. krM approached this project with a focus on flexibility, safety, and evolving community needs.

The space required modernization to support current digital resources and programming and now creates an agile environment that allows staff to deploy technology throughout the space, supporting digital literacy and adaptable programming.

Clearly Defined Spaces

Improving safety and spatial clarity is a key design priority. The children’s collection was consolidated entirely on the third floor, establishing clear separation from adult areas and creating a cohesive, family-focused environment. This reorganization also resolves inefficiencies caused by collections that have outgrown their original footprint.

Flexible Programming

This year the teen area will be relocated to a dedicated second-floor space designed for visibility, flexibility, and independent use. With these changes, the first floor will house the adult AV collection, new study rooms, and social work offices supporting individuals experiencing homelessness—reinforcing the library’s role as an inclusive and responsive community resource.
