Sharing Beauty

krM Architecture’s design for the Michigan City Welcome Center highlights the natural beauty of northwestern Indiana. We worked closely with a branding consultant to integrate messaging throughout the building’s interior in the form of gallery exhibits, informing visitors about the region’s distinctive features, including limestone, dunes, and waterways.

Reflecting Nature

The building’s design draws inspiration from these natural elements, incorporating rich limestone, organic forms, and other authentic, nature‑based materials. A prominent water feature at the entry works in harmony with the architecture, helping to capture and manage rainwater in coordination with the building’s gutter system. On the opposite side, a boardwalk invites visitors to wander through the wetlands and enjoy a restorative break during their travels.

A Window to the Outside

The Welcome Center is designed to be very transparent, taking advantage of views to the wooded wetland behind the building. This feature further highlights the original goal of the project: reflecting the beauty of the surrounding natural environment.
